I want to talk about getting lost. Not the scary kind, not the kind where your heart is pounding and you are genuinely concerned about finding your way back to civilization. I mean the other kind. The kind where you are in a corn maze on a Saturday afternoon in October with someone you love and some very confident children who are already three turns ahead of you, and you take a wrong turn and then another wrong turn and then several more wrong turns, and somewhere around wrong turn number seven you stop caring about finding the exit and start just laughing.
That is the feeling this song is built on.
“Corn Mazes” is Track 4 on Give Me Fall, my new album releasing August 31st, and it might be the most layered song on the whole record even though it sounds the most playful. On the surface it is a fun, bouncy, singalong song about being hopelessly lost in a corn maze. Underneath that it is a song about love and what it means to choose someone so completely that getting lost with them feels better than being found without them.
The first verse sets the scene with a precision I am particularly proud of. We paid the man at the entrance, grabbed the little map. Someone claimed to have a strategy. Twenty minutes later we were going in the same direction seven different ways. If you have ever done a corn maze with an overconfident navigator you know exactly how this goes and you are probably smiling right now.
The second verse is where the metaphor starts to surface. October sunlight cutting through the corn stalks above you. The kids laughing because the adults can’t figure it out. And somewhere in the middle of wrong turn number ten, you stop thinking about the exit and you just think about the person next to you. That shift, from trying to solve the maze to just being in the maze with someone you love, is the whole emotional journey of the song.
The pre-chorus asks a question that I think is actually the deepest question on this entire album. Maybe getting lost was always part of this. Maybe I don’t need to know the way. Long as you’re the one who’s lost here with me, I could wander every single day. I wrote that pre-chorus in about three minutes and then sat very still for a moment because I realized I had accidentally written something true about my own life.
The bridge is where the song fully commits to its metaphor. There’s a metaphor in here somewhere, about the way that love works. You think you need the map, you think you need the exit. But the best part is the part where you forget to look. And I truly believe that. I think some of the best moments in a relationship happen when you stop trying to navigate and just let yourself be wherever you are with whoever you are with.
The song ends exactly the way a good corn maze day ends. You finally find the exit right as the sun gets low. The kids are cold and hungry and you call that a win. Someone buys everyone hot cider. Someone grabs your hand and smiles and says same time next year. And you say yes. Without hesitation. Every time.
