  • What Release Day Actually Feels Like (An Honest Account)

What Release Day Actually Feels Like (An Honest Account)

Yesterday was release day. Today I am on my third cup of coffee and I have zero regrets.

Release day as an independent artist is simultaneously the most exciting and most vulnerable day in the creative process. You know every word, every beat. And then you hit publish and it stops being yours. It belongs to anyone who finds it.

The vulnerability of that never gets smaller. I don’t think it’s supposed to.

But then the messages start. Someone played The Most Wonderful Time of the Year for her mom group and they were all crying laughing at the same time. Someone said I Can’t Believe I Missed This hit her so hard she had to sit in her car before she could drive. Someone else immediately called their childhood best friend after Seven Digits without even explaining why.

That is the whole reason. Every single time.

If you listened on day one, thank you. If you haven’t yet, Mixtape Mindset is waiting. And if you love it, share it with one person today. That single action is the most powerful thing a listener can do for an independent artist.

  • Mixtape Mindset Is HERE and I Have a Lot of Feelings About It

Mixtape Mindset Is HERE and I Have a Lot of Feelings About It

It is August 1st and the album is out and I am barely holding it together.

Mixtape Mindset is available right now on all streaming platforms and I want to tell you what this album is before you press play.

It is twelve songs that flow together as one continuous experience β€” the way songs on a great mixtape always belong together. Not in sections or categories. Just one song leading naturally into the next the way a really good mix always does. You let it take you somewhere.

Where? Somewhere specific. The school bus pulling away on the first day of school. The Blockbuster parking lot on a Friday night. 3am with the modem screaming and a blank CD in the drive. The living room floor on a Saturday morning with cereal and cartoons. A phone number you still know by heart that you haven’t dialed in twenty years.

This album surprised me. It started with one song and kept going until it was twelve, and somewhere in the middle I realized I was building something about memory, connection, and the specific rituals of a decade that shaped everyone who lived it.

It is funny. It is heartfelt. It will make you text someone. Go listen.

  • IT’S MY BIRTHDAY! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‚

    IT’S MY BIRTHDAY! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‚

Today is my birthday and I am taking the whole post to just… celebrate that. Because honestly? I think we should celebrate birthdays more, not less, as we get older. The candles matter more, not less.

So β€” happy birthday to me! And thank you, genuinely, for being here to celebrate with me.

I want to do a little reflection, because that’s what birthdays are for.

This time last year, I did not know that 2026 would become the year of an album every single month. I did not know I’d write 31 songs based on the Book of Proverbs, or an 8-track Neo-Soul album based on Song of Solomon, or a full concept musical about the Babylonian exile, or that my own son would co-write a Halloween album with me. I did not know I’d commit to writing a blog every single day and actually do it.

If you had told me all of that a year ago, I think I would have laughed and said “that sounds like a lot.”

It WAS a lot. It still is. And it has been one of the best years of my creative life.

I want to spend my birthday doing the things that fill me up: time with family, maybe a little quiet, definitely some music, and probably way too much cake. (There’s no such thing as too much cake. I don’t know who told you that.)

If you want to give me a birthday gift β€” and you absolutely don’t have to, but if you’re feeling generous β€” here’s what would mean the most to me: stream an album of mine today. Add a song to a playlist. Follow me on Spotify if you haven’t. Tell one friend about my music. Leave a comment telling me which song has meant the most to you this year.

That’s the gift. That’s always been the gift. You, listening, connecting, being here.

Thank you for an incredible first seven months of 2026. The next five are going to be even better. I can feel it.

πŸŽ‚ Here’s to another year of music, stories, stitches, harps, spooky season, and everything in between. 🎢

  • One More Day Until My Birthday (And Some Thoughts on Getting Older as an Artist)

One More Day Until My Birthday (And Some Thoughts on Getting Older as an Artist)

Tomorrow is my birthday. I have THOUGHTS.

Getting older as an artist is such a specific experience. There’s a cultural narrative that creativity is a young person’s game β€” that your best ideas come early, that artists “peak” and then coast. I have found the exact opposite to be true for me.

This year β€” the year I’m about to add a candle to β€” has been the most creatively productive year of my entire life. An album every month. A daily blog. Quilt Anthems out in the world. Bring Us Home, the most ambitious thing I’ve ever attempted, nearly complete. A Halloween album with my son. A book in progress.

I don’t think that’s a coincidence of timing. I think it’s a function of accumulated life. Every year adds material. Every year adds perspective. Every year, the well gets deeper even as the surface sometimes feels the same.

Tomorrow I turn a year older and I am, genuinely, more excited about what’s ahead than I’ve ever been. That’s not something I take for granted. I know not everyone feels that way about getting older, and I don’t think you have to. But for me, right now, in this season β€” it feels like more is starting, not less.

See you tomorrow. We’re celebrating. πŸŽ‚

Follow me on streaming and stick around tomorrow β€” birthday post incoming! 🎢

  • The Songs of “Bring Us Home”: A Journey in Nine Tracks

The Songs of “Bring Us Home”: A Journey in Nine Tracks

Yesterday I introduced you to the Bring Us Home concept. Today, let’s walk through how the story unfolds in song β€” because this album is built to be experienced as one continuous journey, not just a collection of singles.

It opens massive, with the title track Bring Us Home β€” a cry, a plea, the weight of an entire exiled people’s longing in one song.

Then it pulls all the way in close with Hush Now β€” a lullaby. A mother singing her child to sleep with the memory of a golden city neither of them has ever seen. This melody becomes one of the threads that ties the whole album together β€” it returns later, broken, and then again at the very end, fulfilled.

By the Willows sits in dignified grief β€” the harps hung silent, the instruments of joy set aside because joy didn’t feel right in exile.

Why Must I Weep gives Aviva her “I want” moment β€” the song where we understand who she is and what she’s yearning for.

Then the mood flips. Gold of Babylon is lush, brassy, almost seductive β€” the sound of comfort and captivity dressed up as luxury. Because the real danger was never cruelty. It was comfort.

Two Rivers is a tender duet. The Writing on the Wall is the dramatic peak β€” the moment everything turns. Hush Now Reprise is devastating β€” the lullaby broken, a farewell.

And then β€” We Are Home. The finale. The harp sounds again. The lullaby’s golden city becomes real. Hashiveinu β€” “bring us back” β€” resolves into Halleluyah. The plea of track one becomes the praise of the last.

I cried writing the ending. I’m not ashamed of that.
