Sunday Comics: Four Panels and All the Time in the World

Stacks of vintage comic strip newspapers including Dick Tracy, Terry and the Pirates, and Peanuts on a wooden desk

Every album needs a song that just lets you breathe. On Mixtape Mindset that song is Sunday Comics.

It does one thing: it puts you on a Sunday morning with newsprint on your fingers and the funny pages spread across your lap and absolutely nowhere to be.

Garfield. Calvin and Hobbes. The Far Side. Peanuts. These were philosophy in four panels. And the Sunday paper ritual was its own quiet family tradition: Dad with sports, Mom with news, you making a straight line for the funnies before anyone could suggest otherwise.

“No scrolling, no screens, just paper in your hands.” The uninterrupted, physical, fully present act of reading something you were holding with both hands. Nothing notifying you. Just the paper and the strips and the morning.

I love where this sits on Mixtape Mindset, in that stretch of the album that lives in the slow unhurried rituals of 90s life. The things we did slowly because slow was the only speed available. It turns out slow was exactly right.

Calvin and Hobbes. Final answer. Not taking questions. Tell me yours in the comments!
