My Favorite Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day Through Music

Seasonal / Fun

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! If you are celebrating today, I hope there is something green on your table and something warm in your cup and maybe just a little bit of good music in the background.

I have a soft spot for this holiday, maybe because there is something about it that leans into community and story and a certain kind of Celtic soul that I find genuinely beautiful. The music associated with Irish and Irish-influenced traditions has a quality to it that I have always loved, that mix of joy and longing, the way a melody can feel both like a celebration and an ache at the same time.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to bring music into the day:

Put on a traditional Irish folk playlist and just let it live in the background. You do not have to sit and analyze it. Just let it be the soundtrack while you cook, or clean, or sit with someone you love. The fiddles and flutes will do the rest.

Learn even one song. There is something special about knowing a song well enough to hum it or sing it from memory. “Danny Boy” is an obvious classic, but even something simple and joyful that you can carry with you makes the day feel more intentional.

Listen to something that surprises you. A lot of artists have explored Celtic and Irish musical traditions in unexpected ways, blending them with folk, indie, or even pop. Let yourself wander and see what you discover.

And of course, if you are a listener of mine, I have been quietly releasing some Irish-tinged music of my own this season. I wrote these songs because I love the sound and wanted to spend some time in it creatively. If you have not heard them yet, today seems like exactly the right day.

However you celebrate today, I hope there is music in it somewhere. Happy St. Patrick’s Day.

Until next time,

Melanie
