Why I Wrote “Scraps of You”

Quilters know something most people do not: fabric remembers. A shirt somebody wore every Saturday. A dress from a wedding. A work shirt that still holds the shape of the person in the collar.

When someone dies, their clothes are one of the hardest things left to deal with. You cannot keep all of it. You cannot bear to give it away. It sits in bags in a spare room for months because there is no right answer.

So some of us do the thing quilters have always done. We cut it up and make it into something we can keep using.

What “Scraps of You” Is Really About

This song is about a memory quilt. About taking the clothes of someone who is gone and turning them into something you can wrap around yourself.

For me, it is about my dad’s Hawaiian shirts.

My dad wore a Hawaiian shirt every day of his life. Or at least 98% of the days I knew him. We would travel to Hawaii on vacation and he would buy a nice one — Tommy Bahama is the best, and I will not be taking questions on that. Those shirts were his uniform. They were him.

When he passed away, my mom could not bring herself to donate his clothes. How could she? Those were not just shirts. They were vacations and ordinary days and every version of my dad I ever knew.

So she did the thing quilters do. As an act of love, my mom has made two quilts from his Hawaiian shirts so far, with a third still in progress.

Every time I see them, I think of Dad. And when I hug one, it feels like I am hugging my dad.

There is a strange grace in the process. The first cut into someone’s shirt feels almost violent, like you are doing damage to the last of them. Then the pieces start going together, and it becomes something else entirely. A thing you can use. Wash. Wear out. Sleep under.

Grief you can actually hold.

The scraps are not what is left over. They are what is left.
