(Victory from the Start)

The Turn Toward Triumph

After the deep sorrow of “Rachel’s Tears,” the oratorio pivots with “Undefeated” – a powerful baroque declaration that despite all of Herod’s evil, despite all the darkness, Jesus could not be stopped.

The Biblical Foundation

Matthew 2:13-15 shows God’s protection:

“When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. ‘Get up,’ he said, ‘take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.’ So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: ‘Out of Egypt I called my son.’”

Herod tried to kill Jesus. But God protected Him. The enemy’s schemes failed.

Isaiah 54:17 promises, “No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me, declares the Lord.”

Colossians 2:15 declares Christ’s ultimate victory: “And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”

The Baroque Power

“Undefeated” is a triumphant baroque oratorio featuring:

  • Bass soloist with declamatory recitative about Herod’s fear
  • SATB choir in massive counterpoint declaring “Undefeated”
  • Soprano and tenor soloists trading verses
  • Baroque trumpet fanfares and timpani rolls
  • Full baroque orchestra at peak power
  • Organ pedal tones creating foundation

In choir, these triumphant pieces always energized us. After sitting with the sorrow, we got to sing VICTORY! The contrast makes the triumph even sweeter.

Writing This Declaration

The verses tell the story: “A king on earth heard Heaven’s news
A throne of fear, he had to choose
He tried to stop what God ordained
But mercy came, and mercy reigned”

The chorus proclaims Christ’s victory: “Undefeated from the start
Born to heal the broken heart
Every weapon formed will fall
Jesus conquered over all
Death could never hold Him down
Heaven placed a victor’s crown
From the manger to the grave
He came to conquer, came to save
Undefeated”

The bridge lists His victories: “No grave could keep Him
No sin could bind Him
No hell could claim Him
Forever victorious”

The Theology

Romans 8:37 assures us, “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

1 Corinthians 15:57 celebrates, “But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Revelation 19:16 declares His ultimate authority: “On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.”

Jesus wasn’t a victim of circumstances. He wasn’t surprised by opposition. He came KNOWING the battle and KNOWING the victory. From the manger to the resurrection – He was undefeated.

Why This Matters Today

What battles are you facing? What enemies seem overwhelming? What circumstances feel unbeatable?

If Jesus is undefeated, and we are in Him, then WE are undefeated too.

1 John 4:4 promises, “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”

Romans 8:31 asks, “What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”

From Birth to Victory

This piece connects Christmas to Easter. The baby in the manger is the same one who walked out of the tomb. His birth was the beginning of victory. His resurrection was the confirmation.

And because He’s undefeated, death has no power over those who belong to Him.

The King who came cannot be stopped. The victory is already won.
