Introducing “Summer State of Mind” – My New Summer Album Dropping May 18, 2026!

Hey friends! I’m beyond excited to finally share what I’ve been working on for months – my brand new summer album, “Summer State of Mind,” releasing May 18, 2026!

    Living the California Dream

As someone who calls California home, I’m constantly reminded of how lucky I am to live in the sunshine state. Forty minutes to the mountains, thirty minutes to the beach, ninety to the desert – we literally have it all. The weather is mostly always perfect (not scorching like Arizona, not humid like Florida), and the sun sets at a reasonable hour (looking at you, Idaho with your 10pm sunsets!). This California lifestyle inspired so much of this album, and I couldn’t wait to capture that golden state magic in music.

    Summer Music for Summer 2026

“Summer State of Mind” is my love letter to everything summer – from floating in the pool with a cold drink to those magical golden hour sunsets over the Pacific, from Fourth of July celebrations to bittersweet end-of-summer goodbyes, from surviving triple-digit heat to finding romance in the blaze. This album has 13 tracks that take you on a complete summer journey, and I’m so proud of how it turned out.

But let me tell you – getting here wasn’t easy! I wrote, rewrote, edited, and omitted SO many songs. Some just didn’t fit the summer vibe I was going for, no matter how much I loved them. There were comedy songs that felt too forced, slow ballads that dragged the energy down, and upbeat tracks that just didn’t capture the feeling I wanted. The songs that made the final cut? They’re the ones that gave me chills every single time I listened back.

    The Best Part? America!

One of my favorite parts of this album is the celebration of America woven throughout. We’re releasing just in time for Memorial Day weekend, and tracks like “Red White and Pool,” “250 Years Strong,” and “God Bless America” are my tribute to this incredible country. In 2026, we’re celebrating 250 years of American independence – that’s huge! I wanted to honor that milestone with music that captures both the party spirit and the deeper gratitude I feel for living in the land of the free.

    Summer Activities, Summer Vibes

This album covers all the classic summer activities we love – pool parties, beach bonfires, BBQs with friends and family, driving with the windows down, those perfect sunset moments, and yes, even the universal struggle of trying not to get your hair wet at the pool (if you know, you know!).

Whether you’re looking for upbeat EDM tracks to blast at your Fourth of July party (“Red White and Pool” and “BBQ State of Mind” are high-energy dance anthems!), romantic slow jams for beach bonfires (“Summer Romance,” “The One That Got Away”), or nostalgic reflections on summers past (“Put On That Summer Song,” “When Summer Ends”), this album has something for every summer mood.

    Relisten After Relisten

I’ve listened to this album SO many times – not just during production, but afterward, testing the flow, making sure the energy builds and dips at the right moments, ensuring that each song transitions smoothly into the next. I’ve listened to it while driving down the coast, while floating in my pool, during sunset walks, and late at night when the nostalgia hits. Every single time, I feel something. And that’s what I want for you, too.

I made this album for people who love summer as much as I do. For people who get emotional when September rolls around. For people who understand that summer isn’t just a season – it’s a feeling, a state of mind, a way of living.

    What’s Coming

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be breaking down each song on the album – the stories behind them, what inspired them, and why they made the final cut. I’ll share behind-the-scenes moments from the songwriting process, the creative decisions that shaped this project, and the journey from idea to finished track.

“Summer State of Mind” drops Monday, May 18th, 2026 – perfectly timed to hit Release Radar and kick off the unofficial start of summer! It’ll be available on all streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, and more).

Make sure to FOLLOW me on your streaming platform so you’ll see it the moment it drops! That way, my new music will always show up in your feed when I release something new.

  • Why Music Community Matters: A Songwriter’s Thanks to Her Biggest Supporters

Why Music Community Matters: A Songwriter’s Thanks to Her Biggest Supporters

How do you support an independent musician?  The most impactful ways to support an independent musician include streaming their music regularly, sharing it personally with people you know, leaving reviews or comments, and telling your friends directly. Personal word-of-mouth still outperforms any algorithm for independent artists building a real audience.

The People Who Show Up for Real

I want to talk about friendship and music community today, and I want to be specific about what I mean. Not the casual, social-media-friendly version of support where you click like and move on. I mean the real kind. The friends who showed up in your direct messages the morning your first album dropped and said I am so proud of you and actually meant it. The ones who stream your songs on repeat. The ones who say when is the next one coming, who tell their people about your music without being asked, who treat your creative dreams as real and worthy of their time and attention.

I have been genuinely overwhelmed by that kind of music community support in 2026. In the best possible way. This year has been a year of putting myself out there in ways that scared me at the start of every single release. Every album is an act of trust. You are handing something deeply personal to the world and hoping it lands with kindness. The fact that it has, over and over this year, is not luck or algorithm. It is the people around me holding the music carefully.

What Does Real Fan Support Actually Look Like?

Real support from music fans looks different than most people expect. It is not always financial, though that matters enormously for independent artists. It is the friend who adds your song to their personal playlist without being prompted and then tells you three weeks later that they cannot stop listening to it. It is the person who shares your release post with something genuine written about why it matters to them. It is the one who asks about the story behind a specific lyric, who remembers what you told them about the writing process months ago, who treats your creative output as something that deserves to be taken seriously.

There is a particular kind of person in a music community who truly gets what the music means to you as its maker. Who does not just say nice song but actually asks what you were feeling in the room when you wrote it. Those people are rare and I have been collecting them like treasure throughout this year. They are the reason the next song gets written on the days when the creative energy is low.

Why Fan Support Changes Everything for an Indie Artist

For an independent singer-songwriter operating without a label or a promotional budget, the listener is the entire distribution network. When you share music you genuinely love, you are doing something that no marketing spend can fully replicate. You are lending your credibility and your relationships to something you believe in. That is an enormous gift.

If you are one of the people who has been here since January, streaming and sharing and showing up, I want you to know that your support is not a small thing. It is enormous. It is the literal foundation of what this music year is. You are not just a passive listener. You are part of the reason this whole thing is actually happening. Thank you for being the chorus behind everything I do.

  • Autopilot – Going Through the Motions

Autopilot – Going Through the Motions

Track 5 from “Do Not Disturb”

Wake up. Coffee. Shower. Smile. Repeat.

When You’re Functioning But Not Living

“Autopilot” is about that state where you’re doing all the right things – showing up, checking boxes, saying what you’re supposed to say – but you’re not actually there.

You’re just going through the motions. A shell with broken wings.

    The Monotony of Survival

The verses capture the mechanical nature of it:

    “Wake up, same routine
    Coffee, shower, fake a smile
    Get through another day
    On autopilot for a while”

“Check the boxes, play the part
Nod along, say the right things
But I’m not really here at all
Just a shell with broken wings”

That’s depression that still gets dressed in the morning. That’s burnout that still shows up to work. That’s going through the motions because stopping would require energy you don’t have.

The Bridge: When Did I Stop Feeling?

The bridge is the moment of awareness:

    “Somewhere along the way
    I stopped feeling anything
    Now I’m just coasting through
    Waiting for something to change
    But nothing ever does”

That last line is the worst part. “But nothing ever does.” The recognition that you’re stuck in this loop with no end in sight. You’re waiting for something to shift, for energy to return, for life to feel real again.

But day after day, it’s the same. Autopilot. Rinse. Repeat.

Why I Chose “Autopilot” as the Metaphor

Because that’s exactly what it feels like. Like you’ve set yourself on automatic and you’re just… going. Not steering. Not choosing. Just following the programmed path.

Wake up. Function. Sleep. Do it again.

    “Just keep moving, keep moving”

That’s the mantra. Don’t stop. Don’t think too hard. Just keep moving.

The Circular Nature of the Song

The outro brings it full circle:

    “Wake up, same routine
Tomorrow I’ll do it all again
    On autopilot, on autopilot
    Until the end”

There’s no resolution. No “and then I got better.” Just the acknowledgment that tomorrow will be the same. And the day after that. On autopilot. Until the end.

    It’s bleak. I know it’s bleak. But it’s honest.

    Who This Song Is For

    This song is for:

    • Anyone who’s faking it through their day
    • People who are functioning but not thriving
    • The person who goes to work, comes home, and feels nothing
    • Anyone stuck in the cycle of going through the motions
    • People who are waiting for something to change but don’t know what

    What This Song Isn’t

This song isn’t giving up. It’s acknowledging. There’s a difference.

Sometimes you need to name the numbness. Sometimes you need to say out loud: “I’m on autopilot and I don’t know how to turn it off.”

    That’s not weakness. That’s awareness.

    My Hope

I hope this song makes people feel less alone in their numbness. I hope it validates the experience of just surviving instead of thriving.

And maybe, just maybe, I hope it’s the first step toward recognizing when you need help – when autopilot has been running too long and you need someone to help you take back the controls.

  • Don’t Take It Personal – Asking for Space Without Guilt

Don’t Take It Personal – Asking for Space Without Guilt

Track 3 from “Do Not Disturb”

How do you tell people you need space without hurting their feelings?

    The Impossible Balance

I love my people. I really do. But sometimes I need them to leave me alone, and that’s really hard to communicate without sounding like a terrible person.

“Don’t Take It Personal” came from that exact frustration. When people want to help, when they mean well, but talking about it just makes everything worse. When the best thing someone can do for you is give you space, but they take your need for solitude as a personal rejection.

    It’s Not You, It’s Everyone

The opening verse says it all:

“Don’t take it personal when I don’t answer my phone
When I say I’m busy but I’m really just at home
It’s not you, it’s everyone, it’s everything at once
And I need to turn it off before I come undone”

That’s the truth. It’s not about any one person. It’s about the cumulative weight of everyone. Every text. Every call. Every question. Every expectation. It all adds up until I can’t breathe.

    The Bridge: My Breaking Point

The bridge is where I finally let the frustration show:

“Please don’t text me if you need an answer, please just call me
    I’m not making anyone happy
I’m working hard and working harder every day
    I’m sorry I can’t remember, I’m sorry I’m not perfect”

This is me at my breaking point. Working as hard as I can and still feeling like I’m failing everyone. Forgetting things. Messing up. Disappointing people no matter how hard I try.

And beneath the calm exterior of “don’t take it personal” is this exhausted, apologetic person who just needs a break.

    Why This Song Matters

Because we shouldn’t have to apologize for needing space.

Because asking for solitude doesn’t make us bad people.

Because sometimes the kindest thing we can do – for ourselves AND for others – is to step away before we break.

    The Calm Tone Is Intentional

I didn’t want this song to sound angry or defensive (that comes later in the album). I wanted it to sound calm but firm. Like a boundary that’s been carefully set.

“I’m not mad, I’m not hurt
I just need some space to breathe
    Don’t take it personal
    I just need to be”

    Calm. Clear. Unapologetic.

    Who This Song Is For

    This song is for:

    • Anyone who feels guilty for needing alone time
    • People whose loved ones take their need for space personally
    • The person who’s always available until they’re completely depleted
    • Anyone who’s tired of explaining why they need to be alone
    • People who love others but still need boundaries

What I Want You to Know

Your need for space is valid. Your need for silence is valid. Your need to step back is valid.

And it’s not personal. It really isn’t.

Sometimes we just need to turn everything off before we come undone. And the people who love us should understand that.

How do you ask for space without feeling guilty? Do the people in your life respect your boundaries?

  • Songs I Write That I Never Plan To

Songs I Write That I Never Plan To

    Personal / Storytelling

Some songs I plan. I sit down with an intention, a theme, a structure in mind. I know what I am trying to say before I say it, and the writing process is mostly about finding the right words for a thing I have already decided I want to write about.

And then there are the other kind.

The other kind comes out of nowhere. Or not nowhere exactly, but from a moment that catches you off guard. A conversation you did not expect to be moved by. A realization that arrives while you are doing something completely ordinary. A feeling that shows up uninvited and will not leave until you have given it somewhere to live.

Those unplanned songs are almost always the ones that mean the most to me.

I wrote a song not long ago for someone I work with who was leaving her role. She had been a presence in my professional life that I genuinely valued, someone with warmth and integrity and the kind of leadership that makes you want to show up and do better. When she announced she was moving on, I did not plan to write her a song. It just started forming, the way those songs do, and by the time I finished it I knew it was something I had to share.

I also wrote a song about being a homeschooling mom navigating some of the harder moments of that journey. About being afraid that I was not enough for my kid in a season where he really needed me to be. That song was not on any content calendar. There was no plan for it. It came out of a quiet moment of honest prayer and self-examination, and it ended up saying things I did not even know I needed to say.

I think these songs find their way out because the heart has a backlog. All day long we are processing things, carrying things, setting things aside for later. And sometimes creative work is the only container big enough to hold what will not fit anywhere else.

If you are a songwriter or any kind of creative, I want to encourage you to follow those unexpected pulls. The project that interrupts your project. The song that asks to be written before you are ready to write it. The piece that does not make sense for your content plan or your release schedule or your brand.

Those are usually the truest ones.

They do not show up on my calendar. They show up in me. And I have learned to take that seriously.

    Until next time,

    Melanie
