Don’t Take It Personal – Asking for Space Without Guilt

Track 3 from “Do Not Disturb”

How do you tell people you need space without hurting their feelings?

    The Impossible Balance

I love my people. I really do. But sometimes I need them to leave me alone, and that’s really hard to communicate without sounding like a terrible person.

“Don’t Take It Personal” came from that exact frustration. When people want to help, when they mean well, but talking about it just makes everything worse. When the best thing someone can do for you is give you space, but they take your need for solitude as a personal rejection.

    It’s Not You, It’s Everyone

The opening verse says it all:

“Don’t take it personal when I don’t answer my phone
When I say I’m busy but I’m really just at home
It’s not you, it’s everyone, it’s everything at once
And I need to turn it off before I come undone”

That’s the truth. It’s not about any one person. It’s about the cumulative weight of everyone. Every text. Every call. Every question. Every expectation. It all adds up until I can’t breathe.

    The Bridge: My Breaking Point

The bridge is where I finally let the frustration show:

“Please don’t text me if you need an answer, please just call me
    I’m not making anyone happy
I’m working hard and working harder every day
    I’m sorry I can’t remember, I’m sorry I’m not perfect”

This is me at my breaking point. Working as hard as I can and still feeling like I’m failing everyone. Forgetting things. Messing up. Disappointing people no matter how hard I try.

And beneath the calm exterior of “don’t take it personal” is this exhausted, apologetic person who just needs a break.

    Why This Song Matters

Because we shouldn’t have to apologize for needing space.

Because asking for solitude doesn’t make us bad people.

Because sometimes the kindest thing we can do – for ourselves AND for others – is to step away before we break.

    The Calm Tone Is Intentional

I didn’t want this song to sound angry or defensive (that comes later in the album). I wanted it to sound calm but firm. Like a boundary that’s been carefully set.

“I’m not mad, I’m not hurt
I just need some space to breathe
    Don’t take it personal
    I just need to be”

    Calm. Clear. Unapologetic.

    Who This Song Is For

    This song is for:

    • Anyone who feels guilty for needing alone time
    • People whose loved ones take their need for space personally
    • The person who’s always available until they’re completely depleted
    • Anyone who’s tired of explaining why they need to be alone
    • People who love others but still need boundaries

What I Want You to Know

Your need for space is valid. Your need for silence is valid. Your need to step back is valid.

And it’s not personal. It really isn’t.

Sometimes we just need to turn everything off before we come undone. And the people who love us should understand that.

  • Rainy Day Inside – When Grey Skies Feel Like Permission

Rainy Day Inside – When Grey Skies Feel Like Permission

Track 2 from “Do Not Disturb”

Have you ever felt relieved when the weather is bad?

    The Weird Guilt of Sunshine

Here’s something I’ve noticed: on beautiful sunny days, I feel guilty if I’m not happy. If I’m not productive. If I don’t want to go outside and “make the most of it.”

The sun feels like pressure. Like the universe is telling me I should be in a good mood, I should be grateful, I should be doing something with this perfect weather.

But when it rains? When the sky is grey and gloomy? Suddenly I have permission to stay inside. To do nothing. To match my mood to the weather without feeling like I’m wasting something.

    That’s What This Song Is

“Rainy Day Inside” is about the relief that comes when the weather validates your need to be still.

“Grey skies match my mood somehow
    Makes me feel less alone
    When the weather’s sad too
    I don’t have to pretend I’m strong”

When everything outside is grey and quiet, I don’t have to explain why I want to stay in my pajamas and stare out the window. The rain gives me an excuse.

The Bridge: No Sun to Tell Me I Should Smile

The bridge captures what I really mean:

“No sun to tell me I should smile
No blue skies making me feel guilty
For wanting to stay still for a while
In the grey, I’m finally free”

That’s it. That’s the whole thing. The freedom that comes when external conditions match your internal state.

    Why This Follows “Four Walls”

After “Four Walls” establishes the need for refuge, “Rainy Day Inside” adds the atmosphere. It’s the soundtrack to being in those four walls. The rain on the window. The foggy glass. The permission to just… be.

    The Comfort in Grey

I know it sounds weird to find comfort in grey skies, but there’s something honest about it. Rain doesn’t pretend. Clouds don’t perform. Grey weather just is, and that’s exactly what I need to be sometimes.

Not happy. Not sad. Just existing in the grey, matching the world outside, finally free from the pressure to be anything other than what I am in this moment.

    Who This Song Is For

    This song is for:

    • Anyone who’s ever been relieved when plans got cancelled due to weather
    • People who feel pressure to be happy when the sun is shining
    • Anyone who finds peace in grey days
    • The person who needs permission to do absolutely nothing
    • Anyone tired of performing happiness

    What I Hope You Feel

When you listen to this song, I hope you feel permission. Permission to rest. Permission to be still. Permission to let the world be grey for a while without fighting it.

Sometimes the kindest thing we can do for ourselves is stop trying to be sunny when we feel like rain.

Do rainy days give you permission to rest? Or do you feel guilty no matter what the weather is?

  • Four Walls – When All You Need Is a Locked Door

Four Walls – When All You Need Is a Locked Door

Track 1 from “Do Not Disturb”

There’s something sacred about four walls and a locked door.

    The Feeling Behind the Song

I wrote “Four Walls” on a day when I just needed everyone to stop. Stop asking me questions. Stop needing things from me. Stop expecting me to have answers or energy or enthusiasm. I just wanted to close my door, lock it, and exist in silence.

Not because I was mad at anyone. Not because something terrible happened. Just because I was depleted.

What This Song Is Really About

“Four Walls” isn’t about isolation in a sad way. It’s about refuge. It’s about creating a space where you don’t have to perform, where you don’t have to be “on,” where you can just breathe.

When I sing “Nowhere to be, no one to please / Just me and the quiet, finally” – that’s the exhale I’ve been holding in all day.

    The Bridge That Says Everything

The bridge is my favorite part:

“No voices in my head but my own
No performance, no pretending I’m okay
Just breathing in this moment alone
Where I don’t have to explain or explain away”

That’s it. That’s the whole feeling. The exhaustion of explaining yourself to people. The weight of pretending you’re fine when you’re not. The relief of finally being alone where you don’t owe anyone anything.

Why I Opened the Album With This

I wanted the album to start with peace, not anger. Because that’s what I’m really searching for – not drama, not confrontation, just quiet. Just four walls where I can rest.

This song is permission. Permission to close your door. Permission to need space. Permission to say “not right now” to the world.

    Who This Song Is For

    This song is for:

    • The person who loves their family but still needs a break from them
    • The introvert who’s been peopling too much
    • Anyone who’s ever locked themselves in the bathroom just to have five minutes alone
    • The person who feels guilty for wanting to be by themselves
    • Anyone who’s running on empty and just needs to stop

    My Hope for This Song

I hope when you listen to “Four Walls,” you feel permission to create your own sanctuary. Whether that’s an actual room, a car parked somewhere quiet, a corner of your house, or just putting in headphones and closing your eyes.

You deserve space. You deserve quiet. You deserve four walls and a locked door.

And you don’t have to explain why.
