Something Happens When We Pray
It is hard to explain to someone who has not experienced it. The way that the act of praying, even imperfect and stumbling prayer, seems to shift something. Not always the circumstances. Not always the feelings. But something in the closeness.
“I Feel Close When I Pray” is my attempt to put that into a song.
What This Song Is Really About
This is not a song about having the perfect prayer life. It is not about an hour-long prayer routine or eloquent words or having your theology exactly right when you kneel down.
It is about the simple, almost surprising truth that when you actually show up and pray, something like nearness happens.
There is a well-known line often attributed to various saints of the church: prayer does not change God, it changes me. I have always found that both humbling and beautiful. Because what it suggests is that the purpose of prayer is not primarily to move heaven to our agenda. It is to move us into alignment with heaven.
And in that movement, we feel close.
The Emotional Core: Intimacy
The dominant feeling in this song is intimacy. The kind that is quiet rather than loud. Not the emotional high of a worship concert, though those moments are real and good. This is more like sitting with someone you love and not needing to perform or impress. Just being there. And them being there.
That is what prayer can be, when we let it.
I think so many people have walked away from prayer because it felt one-sided or flat. They spoke and heard nothing back. They tried for a while and stopped.
This song is for the people who are willing to try again. Because the closeness is real. It is not manufactured by emotion. It is the presence of a God who said “draw near to me and I will draw near to you,” and meant it.
What Scripture Speaks to This Song
James 4:8 “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.”
This is the promise that lives at the heart of this song. It is not a maybe. It is a guarantee. The drawing near goes both ways.
Psalm 145:18 “The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.”
Near. Not distant. Not delayed. Near.
Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
The peace that follows prayer is one of the most concrete ways we feel that closeness. It is not always the answer we wanted. But it is the presence we needed.
Matthew 6:6 “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
The prayer that no one else sees is the prayer God specifically shows up for. The private moments matter.
A Personal Note
I wrote this song because I know what it is to go long stretches without praying and then finally come back and remember why I needed it. There is always that moment of “why did I wait so long?”
Prayer is not a discipline I have perfected. But it is the place I consistently feel most held. Most seen. Most like myself.
That is what this song is trying to say. You do not have to be a prayer warrior to feel close when you pray. You just have to show up.
