The Places That Made Us

By Melanie Grace

We all come from somewhere.

Not just geographically, though that’s part of it. We come from family stories and traditions passed down. From accents and recipes and ways of doing things that only make sense if you’re from there. From landscapes that shaped how we see the world and people who shaped how we see ourselves.

“Where I’m From” is about that origin story we all carry.

This song builds toward something profound because our roots are profoundโ€”even when they’re complicated. Maybe especially when they’re complicated. The place we’re from isn’t just a location; it’s the foundation of our identity, for better or worse.

I wanted this song to feel big and cinematic, like you’re looking back over a vast landscape of memory. There’s pride here, but also complexity. Because most of us have mixed feelings about where we’re from. We’re grateful for it and shaped by it, but we’ve also had to grow beyond it in some ways.

At Thanksgiving, when we gather with family, “where we’re from” becomes very present. We see it in the way we set the table, the foods we serve, the stories we tell. We’re literally sitting with our origins, whether we’ve traveled far from them or never really left.

“Where I’m From” acknowledges all of this. The beauty and the pain. The gratitude and the grief. The way our origins both define us and can’t fully contain us.

Because we’re all from somewhere. And understanding where we’re from helps us understand who we areโ€”and who we’re becoming.

This is where the album starts turning toward the deeper, harder emotions. We’re building toward something. Getting ready to face what comes next.

But first, we honor where we came from.

“Where I’m From” is track 11 on My Thanksgiving, available November 21st.
