Track 5: “BBQ State of Mind” – Summer Gathering Meets Dance Floor

If “Red White and Pool” got you moving, “BBQ State of Mind” keeps that energy going! This EDM track transforms the classic American summer BBQ into a full-on dance party celebration.

    The Party Continues

I intentionally placed these two EDM tracks back-to-back because that’s exactly how summer feels – one celebration rolling into the next. Fourth of July leads into more pool parties, more gatherings, more reasons to get together with the people you love. “BBQ State of Mind” captures that momentum.

    All the BBQ Goodness

This song is PACKED with details: burgers, hot dogs, carne asada, baked potatoes, chips (and more chips!), guacamole, salsa, coolers full of ice-cold beer, pitchers of sweet tea and lemonade. If you’ve ever been to a proper summer BBQ, you’ll recognize every single reference.

But it’s not just about the food – it’s about the hospitality, the community, the “come over to our place or we’ll go to yours” energy that makes summer gatherings so special.

    EDM BBQ? Yes, Really.

You might think “wait, BBQ music is supposed to be country or laid-back!” And you’re not wrong – but hear me out. Modern summer BBQs aren’t just about sitting around; they’re about ENERGY. Kids running around, music blasting, people laughing, games happening, the whole vibe is electric and alive.

The EDM production gives “BBQ State of Mind” that same electric energy. It’s the soundtrack to the party, not the sit-down meal. It’s what’s playing when your uncle is dominating at cornhole, your cousin is doing cannonballs in the pool, and everyone’s having the time of their lives.

    The Summer Heat Factor

One of my favorite lines is about eating by the pool in 90-degree weather, “even when it’s 105.” Because that’s real summer in California (and most of America)! We don’t let a little heat stop the party. We set up umbrellas, we jump in the pool to cool off, and we keep the celebration going.

    Building Community

At its heart, “BBQ State of Mind” is about community. It’s about neighbors becoming friends, friends becoming family, and creating those memories that last long after summer ends. The chorus emphasizes this: “I’m in a BBQ state of mind / Good food, good friends, good times.”

    Perfect For…

    • Actual BBQ parties (set this playlist on repeat!)
    • Pool parties that need energy
    • Outdoor summer celebrations
    • Pre-gaming before summer festivals
    • Workout music with a summer vibe
    • Any gathering where you want people dancing

This song makes me grateful for every summer BBQ I’ve ever been to, and excited for all the ones still to come. There’s something sacred about gathering around food, in the sunshine, with people you care about.

  • Americana Music and Place: How American Landscapes Shape Songwriting

Americana Music and Place: How American Landscapes Shape Songwriting

What is Americana music?  Americana music is a genre rooted in traditional American musical forms including folk, country, blues, and roots rock, combined with a strong storytelling emphasis and a sense of geographic and cultural identity. It values authenticity, narrative honesty, and emotional truth over production polish.

    Music That Sounds Like Land

I have been listening lately to music that carries geography inside it. Music that has landscape in its bones. Songs that could only have been made in a specific place, by someone who knows what a particular kind of sky looks like at a particular time of day and decided to put that knowledge directly into the chord progression and the words.

American music has always done this with remarkable distinctiveness. The Delta sounds nothing like Appalachia. The Pacific Coast Highway sounds different from Texas highways. A New York song and a California song might be sitting in identical emotional territory but they feel like completely different countries because they carry their origins in every choice their songwriters made. Geography is not just context for American music. It is content.

What Does Americana Music Mean to an Independent Songwriter?

For an independent singer-songwriter, Americana represents a particular kind of freedom. It is a genre that explicitly rewards rootedness, rewards the story and the truth of the song over technological sophistication, rewards the songwriter willing to plant a flag and say this is where I am from and this is what that place sounds like from the inside.

I have been working toward an Americana project for most of this year and it is almost ready to share. On June 8th, I am releasing ‘Merica, my most explicitly American album. It is wide and open and summer and landscape and patriotic in the deepest and most loving sense: completely in love with what is beautiful and real about this country when it is being its best self. I genuinely cannot wait for you to hear it.

How Does California Shape Your American Sound?

California is in my Americana sound whether I intend it to be or not and I have stopped fighting that. There is a particular openness in California light, a quality of space and warmth and year-round color, that finds its way into the emotional atmosphere of what I write. My songs reach toward the horizon. They believe in possibility. They look outward. That is California all the way through.

But I am equally shaped by the broader American musical traditions I was formed inside: church music, community theater, school choirs, radio on long family drives. All of it is present in the catalog. ‘Merica on June 8th is my love letter to the full American landscape in sound. More details coming soon. Stay close.

Summer Songs 2026: Why Songwriters Are Obsessed With the Summer Sound

What makes a song feel like summer?  A summer song typically features major key tonality, upbeat or mid-tempo groove, imagery of warmth and openness, and an emotional quality of freedom or nostalgic joy. The best summer songs are specific enough to feel real but universal enough that any listener can place themselves directly inside them.

    I Can Feel Summer Coming

Not just in the Southern California weather, though the temperature has absolutely been making its intentions known this week. I feel it in my creative energy, in the way the music I am working on is starting to want to move differently, reach differently, arrive somewhere instead of sit with something. There is a particular lightness that starts appearing in my songwriting at this time of year without being summoned. The themes shift. The tempos want to move faster. The melodies naturally want to go upward.

Summer as a musical feeling is one of the most universally recognizable experiences that exists across cultures. Almost everyone has a summer song that defined a specific year for them, a song that when it plays now instantly transports them back to that exact summer with the windows down and the best version of themselves showing up unexpectedly in the moment.

Why Are Songwriters So Drawn to the Summer Sound?

Summer songs are a creative obsession because they carry a specific and demanding emotional promise: that joy is allowed, that life right now is good, that today is worth being fully present for. That promise is actually harder to deliver in music than it sounds at first. Writing a genuinely great summer song requires all the craft of any other kind of song, but you are additionally working against the risk of it feeling generic, forced, or like a commercial for a feeling rather than the feeling itself.

The secret of every great summer song is specificity. Not happiness in the abstract but this particular happiness on this particular afternoon with these specific people in this exact quality of light. The detail is what makes the joy feel real and earned rather than manufactured. Vague celebration does not connect. Specific, fully-realized, embodied joy absolutely connects.

What Summer Music Is Coming From Melanie Grace?

The first major summer project is I Love America, arriving June 8th, and it has that wide open American summer quality to it that I have been trying to describe all week. Think sky, wind, road, freedom from deadline, the specific feeling of this country at its most beautiful and spacious. That is the emotional landscape this music was built to inhabit.

Summer is coming and I am writing it down as fast as my hands will go. If you want to be the first to know when new music drops, subscribe and come back here every day through the season. The best is genuinely still ahead.
