    The Neighborhood Is Doing Absolutely Everything Right Now

    My neighborhood in Southern California is doing the absolute most right now and I am completely here for it. Everything is in full bloom. The kind of bloom that stops you mid-walk and makes you pull out your phone not to scroll but to photograph, because you cannot quite believe something this beautiful exists right outside your door without requiring a ticket. Pink things and white things and that particular yellow that shows up in spring as if it has been waiting all year for its single moment of full expression.

    Spring songs 2026 have been accumulating in my notebooks for weeks, shaped by this exact season and everything it is visually and emotionally delivering. The longer days, the warmer evenings that now stay warm all the way through instead of turning cool after dark, the sense that something has been decided and the world has made up its mind about moving forward. All of this finds its way into the music whether I plan for it or not.

    Spring tends to push creative work toward completion in a way that winter does not.     I have been writing more new material in recent weeks than I have shared publicly yet, and a lot of it has been directly shaped by this particular spring’s imagery, emotional temperature, and feeling of genuine openness after months of more interior, complex work. It is the most patriotic, most American, most wide-open-landscape music I have ever made. It is built for summer. It is built for windows down and sky overhead and no particular deadline.     Happy Earth Day. I have been outside more than usual this entire week, partly because Southern California has been breathtakingly beautiful right now and partly because I have been deliberately practicing the act of slowing down and actually looking at the world instead of rushing past it on the way to the next thing on my list. There is a particular humility that comes with paying genuine attention to the natural world. The flowers do not care about your release calendar. The birds do not know your streaming numbers. Everything around you is simply doing what it was designed to do, in the season it was made for, without apology or announcement.

    That is a message I keep needing to hear. Earth Day music inspiration does not require grand wilderness expeditions or dramatic natural experiences. It requires noticing. A specific quality of light through your window at a specific time of day. The way your neighborhood smells the evening after a rain. The sound a particular bird makes from a particular tree at a particular hour. These are small observations that become large songs.

A bird I could not identify but whose sound stayed with me for days. The smell of something blooming over a neighbor’s back fence.     There is something about spring that makes me want to write absolutely everything down. I do not know if it is the way the light changes as the days lengthen, or the fact that everything is pushing through the ground after months of being still and quiet, or if it is simply the season doing what it has always done since before I was paying attention. But spring in Southern California, especially in these weeks between the last cool days and the first real warmth of summer, is pure magic for spring songwriting.

    I have been taking more walks this year, partly as part of my commitment to physical health but also because I have started noticing what happens to my creative brain when I step outside and give it permission to wander without an agenda attached. Some of my best lyric ideas in all of 2026 have shown up mid-walk, when I was not trying to write at all. The songs find you when you stop chasing them quite so hard.

    I keep a notes app open specifically for walks. Single words, half-finished phrases, an image that catches. All of it goes in and all of it is material for later. The gap between seeing something and writing about it is where the creative processing actually happens. Songwriting is just noticing, made musical. Spring makes the noticing easy.
