Some songs are hard to write. This was one of them.
“America’s Forgotten” is my sorrowful tribute to those who’ve been left behind – the fallen soldiers, the 325,000 missing migrant children, the Americans sleeping in their cars while illegals get housing, the families torn apart by addiction and despair.
This isn’t a political song. It’s a prayer.
The Fallen
The song opens with our soldiers: “They crossed the ocean, fought in foreign sand, some for freedom, some we don’t understand.”
I think about the empty chairs at Thanksgiving tables. The letters that can never be sent. The wars that saved us and the wars that broke us. We owe them more than we can ever repay.
325,000 Missing Children
This verse breaks my heart every time: “Three hundred twenty-five thousand children lost, crossed the border, and we count the cost. Where are they sleeping? Who knows their names?”
These aren’t statistics. These are children. Real children who disappeared on our watch. How do we sleep at night knowing this?
Americans Sleeping in Cars
“I’m working three jobs, still can’t make rent, while you house strangers in government tents.”
This is the reality so many Americans face. Working themselves to exhaustion and still falling behind, while resources go elsewhere. It’s not heartless to ask: what about our own people?
The Quiet Plea
The chorus is a whispered question: “When will you see us? We’re standing right here. Your own people hurting, drowning in fear.”
It’s not angry. It’s exhausted. It’s the voice of someone who’s been waiting to be noticed for so long.
Why Piano?
This needed to be stripped down. Just piano, gentle strings, and voice. No production, no drums, no flourishes. Just the raw emotion of grief and longing.
The song never builds to triumph. It stays sorrowful throughout because some pain doesn’t resolve quickly.
The Bridge That Breaks Me
“We’re not statistics, we’re not a debate, we’re your neighbors, your children, before it’s too late… please see us.”
That “please see us” gets me every time.
A Song of Advocacy
This isn’t about giving up. It’s about giving voice to those who feel forgotten. Sometimes the most patriotic thing we can do is mourn for those our country left behind.
