    We’ve come so far. From the playful wonder of “Leap Day” to the darkness of “It Runs on Both Sides” to the power of “Bloom Where You’re Planted.” And now? Now we come home.

    “Renewal” is the closing statement. The soft anthem. The moment where I look back at everything we’ve walked through together and say: This is me. Transformed. Renewed. FREE.

    The Story Behind “Renewal”

    This is the song that brings the entire journey full circle. We’ve been through comedy, darkness, healing, and power. We’ve faced family dysfunction, embraced chaos, planted seeds, and claimed our strength.

    And now? Now we acknowledge the transformation. Now we say “I’m not who I was before. And that’s a GOOD thing.”

    Renewal isn’t about becoming someone new. It’s about becoming who you were always meant to be.

    The Soft Power

    “Renewal” is a SOFT anthem. It’s powerful without being bombastic. It’s triumphant without being aggressive. The power comes from TRUTH, not volume.

    Think “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman – that emotional, authentic power that comes from finally accepting yourself. From finally saying “this is who I am, and I’m not apologizing.”

    Start the verses quiet and intimate, almost vulnerable. Build gradually. The chorus is powerful but controlled. The bridge strips back before the final chorus explosion.

    And that last line – “This is me” – should fade out like an exhale. Like peace. Like coming home to yourself.

    The Caterpillar Metaphor

    “The caterpillar doesn’t mourn the wings / It breaks apart to fly to bigger things”

    This is one of my favorite lyrics I’ve ever written. Because it’s TRUE. The caterpillar doesn’t sit in the cocoon thinking “oh no, I’m losing my caterpillar body!” It SURRENDERS to the transformation. It trusts the process.

    And that’s what this whole album has been about. Surrendering to transformation. Trusting that breaking down isn’t the end – it’s the beginning of something bigger.

    The Permission to Change

    That bridge gives us something SO important: PERMISSION.

    “I’m allowed to change / I’m allowed to rearrange / Everything I thought I’d always stay”

    We spend so much time thinking we have to be consistent. That changing means we were “wrong” before. That transformation means admitting failure.

    But what if transformation is actually about becoming MORE yourself? What if changing isn’t betrayal – it’s growth?

    You’re allowed to change. You’re allowed to rearrange. You’re allowed to become.

    What This Song Does for the Album

    “Renewal” brings the journey home. We’ve been through EVERYTHING – joy, pain, laughter, darkness, hope, power. And now we land here: transformed. Renewed. At peace with who we’re becoming.

    This isn’t a loud ending. It’s not a celebration. It’s a quiet, powerful acknowledgment: I’ve been through the fire. I’ve been remade. And I’m okay with who I’m becoming.

    Actually, I’m more than okay. I’m FREE.

    The Final Message

    This album has been a March journey – from playful beginnings through dark valleys and up to powerful peaks. And “Renewal” is me saying to you:

    You can go through all of this and come out BETTER. Not broken. Not damaged. But renewed.

    Transformation isn’t easy. It’s messy. It’s painful. It requires you to face darkness (track 9), to plant hope even when you can’t see results (track 12), to dance in chaos (track 13), and to claim your power (track 14).

    But on the other side? You get to say “This is me.” And mean it.

    What I Hope You Feel

    I want you to feel PEACE. I want you to feel ACCEPTANCE of who you’re becoming. I want you to give yourself permission to be transformed.

    And I want you to know: if you’ve been through hard things, if you’ve faced darkness, if you’ve had to break down to break through – you’re not alone. And you’re not broken.

    You’re being RENEWED.

    After the darkness of track 9, we needed light. We needed air. We needed hope.

    Welcome to “First Thaw” – the beginning of recovery, renewal, and remembering that spring always comes.

    The Story Behind “First Thaw”

    Here in Southern California, we don’t get dramatic seasonal shifts. We don’t have snow melting or frozen rivers breaking up. Our “winter” is… mild. But we DO have these subtle shifts that tell you spring is coming.

    The morning dew gets heavier. The grass looks greener. The air smells different. You start packing away your heavy coats (okay, cardigans – this is SoCal) and reaching for lighter layers.

    And something in YOU shifts too. Something that’s been dormant, waiting, holding its breath – suddenly starts to exhale.

    I’m packing up my heavy coats, tucking sweaters away
    Trading wool for lightweight cardigans, a different kind of day
    The morning dew is glistening on everything I see

    What “First Thaw” Really Means

    This song is about that moment when you realize you’re ready to heal. When you’ve been in survival mode for so long, and suddenly you feel yourself softening, opening, becoming capable of joy again.

    “I’ve been holding myself careful just to make it through / But now I’m softening, ready to begin anew” – that’s the shift. From survival to living. From just getting through to actually being present.

    After track 9’s heaviness, after facing the darkness, this is the first breath of hope. Recovery has begun.

    The California Spring

    That detail about “lightweight cardigans” is so specific to Southern California spring. We’re not going from parkas to t-shirts. We’re going from heavier cardigans to lighter ones. Our seasonal shifts are SUBTLE.

    But they matter. They’re real. And they remind us that even in places where change is gentle, change is still happening.

    “Winter wasn’t harsh but spring still feels like a long-lost friend” – that’s it exactly. Even mild winters end. Even gentle darkness gives way to light.

    The Musical Build

    This song needed to START quiet – almost whispered in verse 1. Like you’re barely daring to hope. And then gradually, gently BUILD through verse 2.

    The bridge is where you let yourself GO – where you give yourself permission to believe that yes, spring is coming, and yes, you’re going to be okay.

    Final chorus should be the fullest, most open sound. Like a flower finally blooming. Like taking the deepest breath you’ve taken in months.

    What This Song Does for the Album

    “First Thaw” is the pivot point. We’ve hit rock bottom in track 9. Now we’re climbing back up. This is hope awakening. This is recovery beginning.

    And it’s gentle. It’s not dramatic. It’s not forcing anything. It’s just… letting things thaw in their own time.

    The next few tracks (11-12) continue this gentle upward trajectory before we explode with energy in tracks 13-15.

    What I Hope You Feel

    I want you to feel HOPE. I want you to feel that first moment when you realize “oh, I might actually be okay.”

    I want you to notice the small signs of spring in your own life – the moments when you catch yourself laughing, or wanting to try something new, or feeling like maybe, just maybe, things are getting better.

    Because they are. Spring always comes. The thaw always happens. And you’re stronger than you know.
