It is here. Happy Halloween, everyone.
Thank you for spending this whole month with me and with Midnight Masquerade. We counted down all thirty-one days together, one song at a time, from a sunny afternoon of pumpkin carving to a family on the sidewalk after midnight. That was the whole journey I wanted this album to take you on, and getting to walk it with you post by post has been my favorite part of the season.
Tonight, put the album on and let it run. Dance the Skeleton Twist with the little ones. Waltz through the title track after they go to bed. Sing the Goblin’s Fart chorus louder than you would ever admit. And when you get to that last song, the dad in the costume t-shirt on the same street as his father and his boys, I hope it makes you smile, because that is the heart of the whole thing. Under all the masks and monsters, it is really about the people you spend the night with.
I made this album because I believe Halloween deserves fresh music as much as any other season, and because the kids trick-or-treating tonight deserve songs made for them, right now. If nineteen new Halloween songs can earn a place next to the old classics, then the shelf just got a little less crowded with the same few records, and that makes me happy. Move over, Purple People Eater. Pull up a chair. There is room for all of us.
