    Skeleton Twist

Now that I am dead, I can twist my head. That is the opening line, and if that does not tell you what kind of song this is, nothing will.

Skeleton Twist is a 1960s dance-craze novelty rock number, the kind of thing that would have been a smash at a sock hop, if the sock hop were held in a graveyard. Twangy surf guitar drenched in reverb, honky-tonk piano, handclaps, and a bone-rattle made of wood blocks and xylophone running all the way through. It is bright, goofy, high energy, and it is in a major key on purpose, so it pops against the darker songs later on the record.

Here is where the fresh-music idea gets fun. The old dance-craze songs are exactly the kind of Halloween record we have been recycling forever. So instead of playing that classic on repeat one more year, I wanted to make a brand new one that does what those songs did best, which is give kids something to physically do. There is a whole dance break in the middle where a caller shouts the moves and everybody answers back. Twist to the left, twist twist. Twist to the right, twist twist. Drop that jaw and clack it twice, now shake it out, all night.

The fun of finishing this one is a good window into how I work. In its earlier form, the song just stopped, right on the bridge, with no real ending. That felt like the DJ cutting the music before the last chorus. So we added a proper final chorus and an outro so it lands instead of just quitting, and we pulled the pre-chorus up front so it sets up both choruses the way it was clearly meant to. Then we built out that call-and-response dance break. Those changes turned a good idea into the most performable track on the whole album. A skeleton twist that kids can actually do with their bodies. That is the point.

Put it on and twist with your kids. Then follow me so the next song lands in your library on its own.

Why Pre-Saving A Folklore Christmas Means the World (And How It Helps You!)

If you’ve ever wondered why artists are always asking you to pre-save their upcoming music on Spotify, here’s the secret: it’s the single best way to make sure you don’t miss a beat, while giving independent music a massive boost!

Whether you’re excited for the spooky ghost stories or the tales of the glories of Christmases long, long ago, here is what pre-saving actually does for you—and for the album:

    • It drops right into your library on launch day: The moment A Folklore Christmas goes live, Spotify will automatically add it straight to your Liked Songs and library. You won’t have to search for it, set a reminder, or worry about missing release day.
    • It feeds the Spotify algorithm: Algorithms pay close attention to pre-save numbers. A high pre-save count signals to Spotify that listeners are eager for these songs, which helps push our holiday tracks onto official curated playlists, radio feeds, and recommendation charts for brand new listeners.
    • It helps independent music thrive: Every single pre-save gives independent artists a louder voice on major streaming platforms, helping us share these rich holiday traditions and old-world stories far and wide.

It only takes one click, but it makes a huge difference!

  • Halloween Night Trick-or-Treat

    Halloween Night Trick-or-Treat

Every album needs a front door, and this is mine. Halloween Night Trick-or-Treat is the opener, and I wrote it to feel like the first minute of a movie. Half past three, the knives come out, the pumpkin guts fly, and the whole family is counting down to sunset.

Here is what I was chasing. That specific childhood feeling of the afternoon before trick-or-treating, when you cannot sit still, you are scarfing dinner, your costume is waiting by the door, and the sun will not go down fast enough. Kids scarfing dinner because they cannot wait. Porch lights glowing left and right. The whole neighborhood turning into something magic for one night. There is even a shoutout in the chorus to the houses that give out the full-size candy bars, because every kid alive keeps a mental map of which house is the good one.

I want to be honest about why a song this simple matters to me. When most families think of a happy, singable Halloween song for little kids, they still reach back to something from 1962. There is almost nothing new in that lane. I wanted to write the modern version, a bright family pop song about the joy of trick-or-treating that a five year old in 2026 can call their own. Not a spooky song, a happy one. Halloween deserves its own I-cannot-wait anthem, the way Christmas has a hundred of them.

A little behind-the-scenes note. This song started life under a different title, The Best Part of Halloween. When I was sequencing the album it became obvious this was the opener, and the opener should say exactly what it is. Halloween Night Trick-or-Treat tells you the whole promise of the record in four words, so I renamed it and put it first.

Play it loud on the first of the month, get the kids moving, and then follow me so every song this month shows up for you automatically.

  • Welcome to Midnight Masquerade

    Welcome to Midnight Masquerade

Happy October, everyone. It is finally my favorite month, and I have something I have been dying to share with you. My new album is called Midnight Masquerade, and it is a whole Halloween record built for the entire family.

Here is the idea that started it all. Picture a masquerade ball where every creature is invited. The skeletons show up first and take the floor. The witches waltz in. A carnival rolls through. Ghosts march past the windows. And by the end of the night, the party spills out onto your own street, where the neighbors are the strangest creatures of all. That is the album. It runs from a sunny afternoon of pumpkin carving all the way to after midnight, and it never stops being fun.

I wrote this one to work on two levels at once. Little ones get farting goblins, a skeleton dance craze, and a headless horseman who only steals candy. Grown-ups get a gothic waltz, a haunted carnival, and a few songs with real chills under the costume. Nobody has to be left out of the party.

All month I am going to post one blog a day. One for each song, and a handful of behind-the-scenes stories about the fun we had writing it. Come back every day and let us count down to Halloween together.
