    Standing at the Bridge

    I want to take one more day here at the edge of this season before tomorrow officially changes everything. May 14th is a bridge day and I want to spend it looking in both directions with equal attention and equal gratitude. Behind me: one of the most creatively rich springs of my life, built daily, one song and one blog post and one honest conversation at a time. Ahead: summer, with all its warmth and expanded energy and music I have been building toward since January.

    This bridge between seasons feels genuinely significant because I can see both ends of it clearly from where I am standing right now. I can see the spring that grew everything this year. And I can see the summer that is going to take what spring grew and open it completely to the sky.

    What Did This Spring Teach You About Making Music?

    This spring taught me the most important lesson I have learned all year: the music you make when you are being completely honest with yourself is always better than the music you make while trying to be impressive or acceptable or safe. Honesty connects. Every song that found its deepest audience this year, whether from Do Not Disturb or Left Out or Through It All, was a song where I stopped managing the impression and simply said the true thing in the most honest way I could find.

    Spring also confirmed what I suspected in January: the creative life is built one consistent day at a time, not in dramatic gestures. Thirty one blog posts. Multiple albums. Hundreds of small creative decisions made in the margins of a full and beautiful life. None of it felt epic or monumental in the individual moments. All of it accumulated into something I am genuinely and deeply proud of.

    What Is Coming in Summer State of Mind?

    Starting tomorrow, May 15th, the Summer State of Mind series begins and you do not want to miss the first post. We will be spending the summer together talking about new music, about creativity in the warm months, about what it means to make art inside a full and beautiful life, and about the specific summer releases that are arriving.

    First and most significantly: ‘Merica releases June 8th. It is my Americana album. It is wide and warm and American in the most loving and genuine sense of that word. It has been waiting a long time to exist in the world and it is almost ready. Summer State of Mind is the season built for it.

    I have butterflies today and I want to acknowledge that specifically. Tomorrow the Summer State of Mind blog era begins and everything shifts into a new season of music and conversation. But today, May 13th, belongs entirely to the almost. To the penultimate feeling. To the day before everything changes into what it has been building toward.

    There is a particular quality in the air right now that I do not have a better word for than almost. Not quite summer yet. Still spring technically and legally. But you can feel that the decision has been made at some atmospheric level. The evenings are warm all the way through without any evening chill. The light stays later than seems reasonable. Something in the world has committed to what is coming.

    Why Is the Almost-Summer Feeling So Powerful in Music?

    I have always been someone who chases the anticipation of seasons as much as the seasons themselves. The week before a holiday. The night before a trip. The last few days before a creative launch you have been building toward for months. There is something in that almost space that is entirely its own experience, not just the absence of the main event but a genuinely distinct emotional atmosphere worth inhabiting consciously.

    Almost-summer music has its own specific character. It is warmer than spring but not yet at full summer intensity. It carries hope and forward momentum and the excitement of something that is now close enough to feel completely real. That is the sonic atmosphere I am living in right now, and the music I am finishing reflects it precisely.

    For this exact moment, today, I would reach for music with warmth and forward movement that has not yet arrived at full summer exuberance.     I Can Feel Summer Coming

    Not just in the Southern California weather, though the temperature has absolutely been making its intentions known this week. I feel it in my creative energy, in the way the music I am working on is starting to want to move differently, reach differently, arrive somewhere instead of sit with something. There is a particular lightness that starts appearing in my songwriting at this time of year without being summoned. The themes shift. The tempos want to move faster. The melodies naturally want to go upward.

    Summer as a musical feeling is one of the most universally recognizable experiences that exists across cultures. Almost everyone has a summer song that defined a specific year for them, a song that when it plays now instantly transports them back to that exact summer with the windows down and the best version of themselves showing up unexpectedly in the moment.

    Why Are Songwriters So Drawn to the Summer Sound?

    Summer songs are a creative obsession because they carry a specific and demanding emotional promise: that joy is allowed, that life right now is good, that today is worth being fully present for. That promise is actually harder to deliver in music than it sounds at first. Writing a genuinely great summer song requires all the craft of any other kind of song, but you are additionally working against the risk of it feeling generic, forced, or like a commercial for a feeling rather than the feeling itself.
