Give Me Fall — The Song That Started It All

There is a moment every single year that stops me in my tracks. It happens before I even check the calendar. It happens before the coffee shop changes its menu or the kids start asking about costumes. It happens the first time I step outside in the morning and the air hits my face differently. Cooler. Crisper. Carrying something I can only describe as possibility. And every single year, without fail, I say the same thing out loud to nobody in particular.

    Give me fall.

That moment is where this song was born.

“Give Me Fall” is the opening track on my brand new album, also called Give Me Fall, releasing August 31st, and it is the most honest thing I have written in a long time. It is not a complicated song. It is not trying to be clever or deep or impressive. It is just me, standing in the middle of October, arms wide open, asking for all of it. The pumpkins on the porch. The hay rides. The corn mazes where you get hopelessly lost and honestly don’t mind at all. The apple cider straight from the jug. The firepit smoke and the flannel and the person you love right there beside you.

Give me fall. Give me all of it.

I wrote this album because fall has always felt like a second beginning to me. F. Scott Fitzgerald said it better than I ever could when he wrote, “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” That line lived in my heart for years before I finally built an entire album around it. There is something about September arriving that feels like permission. Permission to slow down, to wrap up, to savor. Permission to stop rushing through the moments and actually live inside them.

“Give Me Fall” tries to capture that feeling from the very first line. The coffee shop changing its menu overnight. The smell of leaves before you even see them. The calendar turning a page and something in the air confirming what you already knew in your bones. Fall is here. And I reach for you.

Because that is the other thing this whole album is about. Every single song on Give Me Fall has a love thread running through it, because fall is just better with someone. The hay rides and the corn mazes and the pumpkin patch days, all of it becomes something richer and warmer and more worth remembering when you have a person to share it with. The chorus of this song is basically my love language written out loud. Lost together in a corn maze and honestly fine with it. Firepit smoke and a flannel and your arms around me. Give me fall with you.

I work with Claude AI as my songwriting collaborator and use Suno AI for music production, which actually sampled my own voice in the process. I write every single lyric myself, and I am proud of this one. It went through so many drafts before the bridge finally cracked open the way I needed it to. The moment where everything slows down and you realize the last dinner outside has already happened and you didn’t even know it. That quiet urgency, that stay a little longer feeling, that is the emotional center of the whole album and it starts right here in Track 1.

If you have ever stood in the middle of fall and felt something shift inside you, this song is for you. If you have ever wished you could bottle October and save it for February, this song is for you. And if you have ever looked at the person next to you in the middle of a perfectly ordinary fall moment and thought, I want this forever, well. This whole album is for you.

Give Me Fall releases August 31st and I could not be more excited to share it with you. Fifteen songs, all of them written with love, all of them reaching for that golden October feeling. I hope they find you at exactly the right moment.

  • The Notebooks in the Closet: How a $0.25 Target Find Cracked My Heart Wide Open

The Notebooks in the Closet: How a $0.25 Target Find Cracked My Heart Wide Open

I was not looking for treasure today. I was looking for tape.

I was digging through the closet in my office — past the safe, past a box of DVDs I still refuse to let go of (don’t judge me, we all have one) — and my hand landed on something spiral-bound. Then another. Then another. All different colors, purchased different years. By the time I sat back on my heels, I had six college-ruled spiral notebooks stacked in my lap, the kind you’d grab off a Target back-to-school shelf for a quarter back in the day. A quarter! I think they’re two dollars now if they’re a penny. Inflation has come for even our notebooks, y’all.

I didn’t open the first one expecting anything. I thought maybe old to-do lists, maybe some scratch paper from a job I don’t even remember having. Instead, I opened a time capsule of my own handwriting — dated pages, undated pages, poems, journal entries pouring out feelings I’d clearly needed to pour out somewhere, and songs. So many songs. Most of them complete with chord charts scribbled in the margins, like twenty-something me knew exactly what she was doing even when the rest of her life felt like she had no idea.

Reading My Own Heart From Twenty Years Ago

Here’s the part I didn’t expect: reading those pages made me sad for her. For me. For the girl writing at midnight about heartbreak and loneliness and love she wasn’t sure would ever show up. Page after page of raw, unfiltered emotion — and somewhere around notebook three, I had the very clear thought: she needed a therapist. Or anti-depressants. Or honestly, both. Twenty-plus years ago, and I’m just now seeing it in black and white, ink smudged, pages worn soft at the corners.

But here’s the thing about a songwriter’s heart — even in the middle of the ache, she kept writing. She kept turning pain into melody, into rhyme, into something that might one day be sung out loud instead of just felt in silence. That’s the gift and the burden of being a lyricist. You don’t just feel things — you have to write them down until they make sense.

And now, twenty years later, I get to be the one who finally gives those songs the ending they were waiting for.

A stack of various spiral notebooks in different colors, including green, blue, purple, and one with a decorative cover, featuring visible binding and slight wear.

Bringing the Notebooks Back to Life

This is where it got really fun. I started using Claude to help transcribe my absolute chicken scratch handwriting — because let’s be honest, songwriter handwriting in the heat of inspiration is not exactly calligraphy. Claude helped me decode the scribbles, fill in the blanks where pages faded or ink smudged, and gently polish these decades-old drafts into full, sing-ready songs — while keeping every ounce of my original heart intact. Then I take those lyrics into Suno AI to actually produce the music, turning handwritten chord charts from a 2004 notebook into real, listenable songs in 2026.

It’s such a strange and beautiful bridge — my younger self with a pen and a notebook, my current self with AI tools I never could have imagined back then, working together to finally finish what she started. I’ve already pulled nine songs out of just one notebook: songs about waiting for real love, about heartbreak from both sides of a goodbye, about gratitude after the storm, even a genuinely goofy one about a man bag written with one of the most fun people I’ve ever known. Five more notebooks are waiting on my shelf. I have no idea what’s in them yet, and that’s half the thrill.

Here’s a glimpse at one of the songs:

Why I’m Sharing This With You

My heart breaks a little for who I was back then. But I am so, so glad she wrote it all down. Every messy page, every half-finished chorus, every “I don’t know where this is going but I have to write it anyway” — she left me a gift. And I want to share that gift with you.

This is what independent songwriting has always meant to me: taking real feelings — even the hard, unfinished, unresolved ones — and turning them into something that might help someone else feel less alone. If you’ve ever found an old journal and wondered who you even were back then, I hope this makes you feel a little less alone in that too.

I’ll be sharing these restored notebook songs right here on the blog as they’re finished, so if today’s story moved you even a little, stick around — there’s a lot more in these pages.

Handwritten note on lined paper with the date 5/12/04, mentioning 'Team Filled Eyes' and 'Melinda Done'.

  • “Summer State of Mind” – Track 1: The Song That Started It All

“Summer State of Mind” – Track 1: The Song That Started It All

When I set out to write a summer album, I knew I needed a title track that captured everything I wanted to say in three minutes – and “Summer State of Mind” became exactly that. It’s the first song on the album for a reason: it sets the tone for the entire journey ahead.

    The Moment That Inspired It

Picture this: It’s a Friday afternoon, you clock out early, throw on your flip-flops, roll down the windows, and just drive. No plans, no stress, just sunshine and the promise of a weekend ahead. That feeling – that shift from work mode to summer mode – is where “Summer State of Mind” was born.

I wanted to capture that first-day-of-summer energy, when you trade your deadlines for paradise and everything just feels… lighter. Easier. Right.

    What Makes This Song Special

“Summer State of Mind” is an upbeat, feel-good anthem that kicks off the album with pure summer optimism. The lyrics paint a picture of those perfect summer moments: grabbing limes and ice from the store, feet up by the pool, phone on silent, world feeling wide open.

The chorus is intentionally simple and singable: “I’m in a summer state of mind / Leaving all my worries behind.” Because that’s what summer is really about – not perfection, but presence. Being fully in the moment, soaking it all in, letting yourself just BE.

    Why It Opens the Album

Every album needs a strong opener that tells you what you’re in for, and “Summer State of Mind” does exactly that. It’s upbeat without being overwhelming, relatable without being too specific, and optimistic without being cheesy. It welcomes you into the summer journey and says, “Hey, let’s do this together.”

    The Vibe

Musically, this is bright acoustic pop with a breezy, poolside feel. Think acoustic guitar, light drums, walking bass line, and harmonies that make you want to sing along. It’s the kind of song you want playing when you’re driving to the beach, hosting a backyard BBQ, or just lying in a hammock with nowhere to be.

    For the Playlist

If you’re making a summer 2026 playlist, this is your opening track. It’s perfect for:

    • Road trips to the beach
    • Pool party background music
    • Saturday morning coffee on the patio
    • Any moment when you need to shift into summer mode

This song reminds me why I love summer so much – and why I love California. Every time I listen to it, I’m transported back to that feeling of complete freedom and contentment. That’s the state of mind I want to live in all year long.

What puts YOU in a summer state of mind? Is it a specific place, a smell, a song, an activity? Drop a comment below and let me know! And don’t forget to follow me on your streaming platform so you catch all the new summer music coming your way!
