Track 10: “California Life” – Living the Golden State Dream

After the emotional vulnerability of “The One That Got Away,” “California Life” lifts us back up with pure, unapologetic California pride! This upbeat anthem is my love letter to the state I call home – and it’s a celebration you can FEEL.

    Why California?

I’m constantly aware of how lucky I am to live in California. Where else can you be at the beach in 30 minutes, in the mountains in 40, and in the desert in 90? Where else is the weather this consistently perfect – not scorching like Arizona, not humid like Florida – just that gorgeous 70-72 degree California sunshine?

“California Life” is my gratitude expressed through music. It’s every “wow, we really live here” moment captured in one anthem.

    The Geography Flex

The song opens with the ultimate California flex: “Forty minutes to the mountains, if the traffic’s right / Thirty minutes to the beach, where the sun shines bright / Ninety minutes to the desert, palm trees in the sand / This is California living, best place in the land.”

Because that diversity – that access to completely different ecosystems within a short drive – is UNIQUE. We can literally surf and ski in the same day if we want to. We have redwood forests AND Joshua trees. We have the Pacific Ocean AND Sierra Nevada mountains.

    The Weather (Obviously)

One of my favorite lines is the playful call-out: “The sun sets at a decent hour (talk to you, Idaho).” Because if you’ve ever been to a northern state in summer where it’s still light at 10pm, you know how disorienting that is! California’s sunset timing is PERFECT.

And yes, we have to acknowledge: the weather is almost always ideal. No humidity battles. No freezing winters (in most of the state). Just sunshine, blue skies, and that perfect California breeze.

    The Culture and Lifestyle

Beyond geography and weather, the song celebrates California culture: “Tacos from a truck, wine from Napa’s best / Avocados year-round, citrus trees out west.”

The food scene alone makes California worth celebrating. Where else can you get authentic street tacos, world-class wine, and fresh avocados year-round? The cultural diversity, the farm-to-table lifestyle, the innovation and creativity – it all contributes to what makes California special.

    Big Band Energy

Musically, “California Life” is a bold big band celebration – punchy brass, tight upright bass, crisp swinging drums, dynamic horn stabs, and a theatrical Broadway-inspired finish. It’s got that festival-anthem quality that makes you want to throw your hands in the air and celebrate.

This isn’t background music. This is DECLARATION music. This is pride.

    For My Fellow Californians

If you’re from California, this song is for you. It’s for every time you’ve tried to explain to out-of-state friends why you’d never leave. It’s for every sunset over the Pacific that took your breath away. It’s for every morning you woke up grateful to live here.

    For Everyone Else

And if you’re not from California? This song is an invitation. Come visit. Experience it. Understand why we’re so obsessed with this place. The Golden State isn’t just a nickname – it’s a lifestyle, a mindset, a blessing.

    When To Play It

    • Road trips along California highways
    • Beach parties in SoCal
    • Wine tasting in Napa
    • Hiking in Big Sur
    • Any California celebration
    • Showing off to visiting friends
    • Pride moments about where you live

I wrote “California Life” because I never want to take this place for granted. Every day here feels like a gift, and I wanted to capture that gratitude in song.

Are you from California? What’s your favorite thing about living here? Or if you’ve visited – what made the biggest impression? Let’s celebrate the Golden State together in the comments!

  • “Summer State of Mind” – Track 1: The Song That Started It All

“Summer State of Mind” – Track 1: The Song That Started It All

When I set out to write a summer album, I knew I needed a title track that captured everything I wanted to say in three minutes – and “Summer State of Mind” became exactly that. It’s the first song on the album for a reason: it sets the tone for the entire journey ahead.

    The Moment That Inspired It

Picture this: It’s a Friday afternoon, you clock out early, throw on your flip-flops, roll down the windows, and just drive. No plans, no stress, just sunshine and the promise of a weekend ahead. That feeling – that shift from work mode to summer mode – is where “Summer State of Mind” was born.

I wanted to capture that first-day-of-summer energy, when you trade your deadlines for paradise and everything just feels… lighter. Easier. Right.

    What Makes This Song Special

“Summer State of Mind” is an upbeat, feel-good anthem that kicks off the album with pure summer optimism. The lyrics paint a picture of those perfect summer moments: grabbing limes and ice from the store, feet up by the pool, phone on silent, world feeling wide open.

The chorus is intentionally simple and singable: “I’m in a summer state of mind / Leaving all my worries behind.” Because that’s what summer is really about – not perfection, but presence. Being fully in the moment, soaking it all in, letting yourself just BE.

    Why It Opens the Album

Every album needs a strong opener that tells you what you’re in for, and “Summer State of Mind” does exactly that. It’s upbeat without being overwhelming, relatable without being too specific, and optimistic without being cheesy. It welcomes you into the summer journey and says, “Hey, let’s do this together.”

    The Vibe

Musically, this is bright acoustic pop with a breezy, poolside feel. Think acoustic guitar, light drums, walking bass line, and harmonies that make you want to sing along. It’s the kind of song you want playing when you’re driving to the beach, hosting a backyard BBQ, or just lying in a hammock with nowhere to be.

    For the Playlist

If you’re making a summer 2026 playlist, this is your opening track. It’s perfect for:

    • Road trips to the beach
    • Pool party background music
    • Saturday morning coffee on the patio
    • Any moment when you need to shift into summer mode

This song reminds me why I love summer so much – and why I love California. Every time I listen to it, I’m transported back to that feeling of complete freedom and contentment. That’s the state of mind I want to live in all year long.
